Credentials

AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator)

An alternative to CPO certification, administered by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Satisfies the same Illinois IDPH operator requirement.

What it actually means in practice

AFO certification is issued by NRPA and targets aquatic facility managers at park districts, YMCAs, and municipal recreation programs. It covers the same technical scope as CPO — chemistry, code, equipment — with additional emphasis on aquatic facility management and programming. Illinois IDPH treats CPO and AFO certifications as equivalent for the legal operator requirement. Aqua-Guard field staff hold both credentials across the team depending on their assigned facility type.

What people commonly get wrong

  • AFO is not more rigorous than CPO or vice versa — they target different audiences.

  • A facility does not need both a CPO and an AFO on staff. One of either satisfies the code.

  • AFO is valid for 5 years, same as CPO.
